A long-sleeve, arc-rated shirt is recommended only when performing work that has the potential for arc flash exposure (i.e., voltage testing and live work). This makes the worker more comfortable and allows the company to ensure that no clothing ignitions will occur, while also offering another layer of protection when wearing the outer shirt.

Arc flash-rated underwear of the right calorific rating offers adequate protection against the far reach of the arc flash that can otherwise easily ignite the under layer of the PPE. The piece of clothing offers extra level of safety, especially when combined with other arc-rated outer wear.
Garments that are not arc rated shall not be permitted to be used to increase the arc rating of a garment or of a clothing system. If you do wear arc-rated underwear under arc rated PPE, there is a layering effect that can add extra protection.

If the under layer is a non-FR, non-melting fabric, it cannot be used to increase the arc rating, so it is important to know that the outer layer has the correct HRC level for the task.
